Prayer

September 26, 2016, By: Jimmy Scruggs

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7
I’ve been reading a book on prayer, and as I take it all in, I am struck with the reality that there is much to learn about prayer. The old Nike quote – “Just Do It” comes to mind because the way to enlarge our prayer life is to do it, consistently. Not because of what we are going to get out of it but because of what God brings to it. Philippians 4:6-7 is one of those verses that can center you and remind you that God has you covered; in the middle of our struggles we can count on him to come through. It takes spiritual maturity to come to that place in life, and I have to admit I have some room to grow. When I come to a hard time in life the first thing I want to do is take care of it instead of praying over it; but progress is good, there can be peace and joy in the middle of our trials. We all know that prayer can’t be all about us; in fact most of my prayers are for others first. I encourage everyone today, and every day, to devote some time and really pray for someone who is in need. God hears our prayers, understands our prayers, and will answer our prayers. This morning my wife Nan and I are focused on prayer for a wonderful friend of CR at Crossroads. When we think about people who are strong in prayer we think of her, you can see her faithful connection to God in all things and at this crucial time she is being lifted up in prayer by many people. Phyllis, we pray that God be upon you today, that you be blessed with comfort and healing, with renewed feeling, and be caught up in God’s perfect love. Love God, love people, Jesus first!
