Recovery is More Than a Step

January 23, 2017, By: Jimmy Scruggs

However as it is written: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him—but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit.” 1 Corinthians 2:9-10
One step at a time, that’s how we do Celebrate Recovery. You can’t do step 1 and jump to step 12 and pronounce yourself well. We call this the 2 step approach to recovery; it doesn’t take a genius to figure out how poorly this works. Sometimes people can get so excited about naming their problems they just want to go out and “help” everyone with theirs. It takes more than naming a problem; recovery is a process that has to be experienced at each step. In Celebrate Recovery the 12 Steps do not stand alone, instead they are directly brought under Christ’s care through the “Beatitudes” and his blessing for each of us as we travel our recovery journey. Each step we take in recovery isn’t just about completing the step. Each of the 12 Steps is designed as a Faith Step. When we step out in faith and take the next recovery step our faith grows. We begin to trust God and believe in his word and promises. Our recovery is not for our own glory, but is a tribute to God’s love and mercy. Our devotion must not only be to God, but to others as well. Just as people were willing to enter into the messiness of our lives, we will reach a point in our recovery that our God-inspired faith will lead us to enter into the messiness of others, that is the message of recovery. Hope is alive! “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” Hebrews 11:1 Love God, love people, Jesus first! Dana Cramer
