The Committee

December 03, 2020, By: Jimmy Scruggs

“Let the peace of Christ keep you in tune with each other, in stepwith each other. None of this going off and doing your own thing. And cultivate thankfulness. Let the word of Christ—the message—have the run of the house.” Colossians 3:15-16 (MSG)

Oh, those painful days when the committee takes over. It doesn’t take long to run into trouble, to get sideways with our relationships, our work, and our purpose. Shoot, some days I run into the committee before I even get out of bed. The committee is constantly trying to take over the day, to run the show, to maintain control. The committee has but one purpose- my needs must be met at all costs. The fuel for the committee is fear that leads to dysfunctional behaviors. Like a car backfiring and in need of a tune up we try and fix ourselves and for a while we seem to run better but then we start misfiring again, and sometimes when we get really out of tune, we need an overhaul.

So, who are the players of this dysfunctional committee; I look in the mirror and see me, myself and I. It is true that I am my own worst enemy when I try and play God. Sometimes we forget to invite God into our day, we know he is always present, the disconnect is on our part. When we admit our powerlessness and believe in a higher power that is Jesus we have a daily reprieve from the committee. All that cerebral junk that swirls around in our head gets refocused on Jesus as we seek to do Gods will in our lives. We just need to be honest in our estimation of ourselves and grow in the love of Jesus and share that love with each other. So, if you have a committee going off in your head, invite Jesus to be the chairperson, the one in charge, you will find the overhaul is amazing.
