Healing Scars

April 25, 2016, By: Jimmy Scruggs

…the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid… Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them! “Peace be with you,” he said. As he spoke, he showed them the wounds in his hands and side. They were filled with joy when they saw the Lord… “As the father has sent me so I am sending you.” Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” John 20: 19-22
I was reading a devotional the other day about the positive aspects of scars. I got to thinking about it and how it connects to recovery. All of us have scars, but I don’t believe we have been scarred for life unless we choose to believe that. It’s important to understand what a scar is. From a physical perspective, it is the healing of a wound; it may look weird on the outside but under that scar is healthy and healed tissue. From an emotional perspective the scar represents the battles we have fought through and by God’s grace overcome. We learn how to make our amends and forgive each other, just as Jesus has forgiven us. From a spiritual perspective our scars align us with Jesus. He showed his scars to his disciples so that they would believe he had risen from the dead. He was beaten and wounded and given up for dead, but he rose from the dead and showed us we too can have eternal life with him. Don’t ever believe that God doesn’t love you, or that you are too far gone and God doesn’t want anything to do with you. That is a lie! All you have to do is talk to Jesus. He will tell you how much you are loved; he has the scars to prove it. Just as Jesus showed his scars, show yours as well; that is where we truly share authentic recovery with each other. Share the hope and love that is Jesus. Love God, Love people, Jesus first! Dana Cramer
