Fast Lane

July 18, 2016, By: Jimmy Scruggs

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. Philippians 4: 6-7
I just got back from a trip to the mountains to watch some baseball, and I was reminded just how busy our highways can be; bumper to bumper, stop and go most of the way up and down. Aggravating as it is, I was reminded of a recovery theme. No, it isn’t about recovery over anger and rage; instead I was reminded that the fast lane isn’t always the fast lane. I noticed that drivers using the right lane seemed to move slower than those of us in the left lane. After all, the left lane is the faster one right? Not always. It seemed the more I stayed in the fast lane, the slower I went and the cars on the right kept passing me by. Then it hit me (no, not another car), slow steady progress is often more productive than racing to the finish. My first few years in recovery I wanted to go fast, be done and move on. I would have God conversations about why it was taking him so long when I was ready and waiting on him. I was trying to speed God up and getting frustrated at his slow right lane speed, come on God can’t you go faster? I soon learned that God will go as fast or slow as he wants, it’s his time frame I’m on, not my own. One of the things I really love at Celebrate Recovery is that we are a program that moves at God’s speed. We take our time in our 12 step groups, inviting God to have his way with us as we engage in a personal 1 on 1 relationship with Jesus. When we slow down we can see how God is working in our lives no matter what lane we are in. Our hurts, habits, and hang-ups aren’t going to go away overnight. I am reminded it took me a long time to get as sick as I was and it takes time to heal as well. God’s Speed. Love God, love people, Jesus first! Dana Cramer
