Emotional Triggers

June 27, 2016, By: Jimmy Scruggs

So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Romans 12: 1-2 (MSG)
There are weeks when maintaining emotional sobriety can be difficult, when the stress of life seems to have the upper hand. That was my week last week and I’m sure I’m not alone. As my wife reminded me, it will all work out. What she was saying to me was trust God, you will be okay. As I listened to recovery testimonies last Friday night at Celebrate Recovery, I was witness to many people telling the same story – Trust God, he is bigger than any of your problems. In recovery we learn about triggers that can set us up for unhealthy behaviors that can cause us to get caught up in ourselves; creating trouble for us and others. There are many triggers that can take us off course, my biggest trigger is fatigue and last week it got the best of me. I slept poorly for three nights and the more tired I became, the more energy I exerted, and the more tired I became. The solution to this trigger is pretty easy, change my environment to get more sleep and go to bed earlier, no big deal, unless you don’t follow through. But most importantly don’t forget who’s in charge and where your strength and peace comes from – it comes from God. When I get overtired I seem to lose focus of that and my ability to cope with everyday stressors is diminished. Add a significant event(s) and you can fill in the blanks. In recovery we learn the tools to get back on track and it starts by acknowledging that God is bigger than any problems we may have, give them to him and it will all work out. One day at a time for a lifetime. Love God, love people, Jesus first! Dana Cramer
