Crisis of Will

April 04, 2016, By: Jimmy Scruggs

“Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good spirit lead me on level ground.” Psalm 143:10
I was on my way to church last Saturday night when I had an unexpected phone call with a person who wanted to stop his addictive behaviors and needed someone to talk to. He was at his bottom and willing to reach out for help. Many of us have been at that crossroads in life; when we are faced with a choice to continue to live by self-will or try another way. When I share with someone in their time of crisis I see it as a most heavenly occasion, sounds odd, but whenever we give up doing something bad it opens the door to start doing something good. When I look back on the start of my recovery, my worst day ended up being the start of my best day. Why? Because I gave up! The crisis of the will I was experiencing demanded a surrender of my addictions so I could start relying on God’s will. More often than not it takes a calamity or crisis to get us to surrender, but once we do, we experience God’s will in a most intimate way. How long does it take me or you or anyone to surrender our will? As long as it takes–over and over again. For me, the most important thing from a recovery perspective was to have someone there to talk with, who understood, who could share a solution and offer hope. That’s how God uses our mistakes, our deepest darkest past, as a way to shine his light on another in crisis. Experiencing a crisis of the will is not a bad place to be if it moves you closer to God; he can change your crisis into something priceless. Check out Celebrate Recovery at Crossroads Church this Friday night; don’t stop before the miracle happens. God who began the good work within you will keep right on helping you grow in his grace until his task within you is finally finished. Philippians 1:6 (TLB) Peace be with you. Dana
