Character Building

July 27, 2020, By: Jimmy Scruggs

“Healthy people don’t need a doctor – sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.” Mark 2:17
Principle 4 (Steps 4-5): “Openly examine and confess my faults to myself, to God, and to someone I trust.” What do we have to gain by admitting our wrongs? There are many benefits, but here are the top three: healing, freedom, and support. We have all heard the phrase, “You’re only as sick as your secrets.” CR says it this way: “Openness is to wholeness as secrets are to sickness.” The amount of energy it takes to keep living a lie is significant and the more we lie the harder it is to keep it all straight in our head. Sooner or later, we will be caught in the lie; either by hitting proverbial wall as it takes its toll on us, or by others who have found us out. But here is the good news. When we open up to God and people, we find healing, freedom, and support. As we progress in our recovery, we will come to the place of offering amends to those we have harmed and forgiving those who have harmed us. Recovery is about spiritual character building. God focuses on our character, and we tend to focus on our image. “We can be mirrors that brightly reflect the glory of the Lord. And as the Spirit of the Lord works with us, we become more and more like Him.” 2 Corinthians 3:18. Be a mirror of God’s love in your life!
