Righteousness

December 12, 2016, By: Jimmy Scruggs

Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin. Romans 3:20
Righteousness, what has that got to do with Christmas or with recovery? Nothing I suppose, unless you believe the greatest gift to man is God’s Son, our Lord and Savior, freeing us from our sins through the Cross. Christ’s perfect righteousness given to imperfect people. When I see it in this wayoh my, what a gift. So how do I achieve righteousness? Will memorizing the bible do itno. Will obeying the 10 commandments do itnosee the verse above. Will doing good works do itno. All these are good things to work for, but why won’t it make me righteous in God’s eyes? We become perfect in God’s eyes not for what we do but through our faith in Jesus Christ. Righteousness for people in recovery can seem so distant; who me? Righteous? You got to be kidding me. This time of year brings joy to some, guilt and resentment to others, and a combination of both to many. Some may ask how can I get into the Christmas spirit when I feel so distraught, weighed down by my hurts and habits, how could God love me? You will find the answer in Jesus. He came specifically for you and I, sinners all, made right by the Cross. If Jesus has this much love for us, maybe we can share some of that love with others, but how? Grace is the key, “My Grace is enough…” This Christmas, spend some time with someone who is hurting and needs a little love. Share the Grace; put your faith into action. “…My grace is enough; it’s all you need. My strength comes into its own in your weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9 (MSG) Love God, love people, Jesus first!
