Accept What You Can’t Change

November 21, 2016, By: Jimmy Scruggs

For it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. Philippians 2:13
I believe that acceptance is the key to maintaining sanity in your life. I have been praying the short version of the serenity prayer for a long time: “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” The wisdom to know the difference directly relates to our sanity/serenity. I used to have a terrible habit of trying to change everything myself, then I went the other way and wanted God to change everything for me and neither approach worked. When I accepted the reality that there are things God expects me to do in my life and there are things only God can do in my life, I found serenity. Have you ever told yourself that God would let you know when it’s time to make a change? You believe it, but then you find something is missing or it goes terribly wrong. Did you prepare for the change or sit back and expect God to do all the work? I had that experience when I stepped down from a leadership role a while ago. I knew God was telling me it was time to make a change, but nothing good came of it until I realized that there would have to be a concentrated effort on my part before I could step down; I had a job to do and I trusted that God would do his part. I’m sure the process was a millisecond in God’s timing but it took three years in earth time to accomplish. What did I discover along the way? — Acceptance, courage, serenity, and wisdom.
