Underestimating God

June 13, 2016, By: Jimmy Scruggs

“Do not remember the sins of my youth and my rebellious ways; according to your love remember me, for you, Lord, are good.” Psalms 25:7
I was talking with a newcomer the other night at Celebrate Recovery/Crossroads and he wanted to know if God could restore his life; he believed his sins were too immoral and that God wanted nothing to do with him. He was suffering from what I, too, had suffered: doubting God, a habit of underestimating him. I think most of us do, at least in thinking of him too narrowly; inadvertently trying to put God in a box that makes sense to us. Imagine that. The guilt carried by a sinner— you and me—can be overwhelming, but the the forgiveness of God is unfailing. I didn’t know if God would be there for me when I started recovery. I hoped we would be, but I really didn’t know until I got on my knees and honestly surrendered my sins to him. I was hoping that my underestimation of God was wrong, and it was. What I had hoped for was huge to me, but in looking back, it was just the tip of the iceberg. I think we tend to see what is in front of us, but God sees everything. He wants to change my heart, but I need to first give him my heart. He knows the hurt, guilt, shame, remorse, and all the mistakes we have made and will make, yet through it all he loves us. The cross is all the proof we need. A changed heart will go a long way in rectifying our mistakes and restoring our relationships.
“Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.  Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.” Psalms 51:1-2
My favorite quote from a great church message over the weekend: “You are only one prayer away from God; you can never out sin the Cross.” -David Harris Love God, Love people, Jesus first! Dana Cramer
