Beautifully Flawed

“But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13 (NASB)
Faith, hope, and love, and the greatest of these is love. I was thinking about this last Friday night at Celebrate Recovery/Crossroads as I listened to a message on “Victory”- voluntarily submit to every change God wants to make in our lives and humbly ask him to remove our shortcomings, our defects of character. You just don’t do that on a whim, or by wishful thinking. No, you have to believe in a power greater than you to restore you; in CR that power is Jesus Christ. I know that Christ’s love is perfect. Many come into recovery not feeling his love. If you were like me, I was self-loathing in the beginning, and even though I knew about God’s love, I couldn’t connect, or so I thought. As I look back, I can see his love working in me from the earliest times in my recovery. I may not have called it love, but the people I met and the hope I experienced at my first meeting, combined with a small amount of faith, was enough to start my recovery. I knew about Jesus but I didn’t have a personal relationship with him. Love changed all that. Any victory I’ve had in recovery, in my walk with Jesus, is due to God’s love. I can’t fix myself, but God can. God’s love is complete; which is the greatest mystery for me. When I was angry with God, when I couldn’t love myself, consumed with selfishness and fear and feeling far from God; God always loved me. It took me awhile to accept his love, and I no longer beat myself up over my imperfections. To be human is to be beautifully flawed. To be in Christ Jesus is to be lovingly redeemed. God’s love endures forever. “Love… bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.” Corinthians 13:4-8 (NASB) Love God, Love people, Jesus first!
