Underestimating God

August 17, 2020, By: Jimmy Scruggs

“Do not remember the sins of my youth and my rebellious ways; according to your love remember me, for you, Lord, are good.” Psalms 25:7
Have you ever been so down that you doubted God could restore your life? Believing your sins are too severe and out of God’s realm is a very dark place to be in. I’ve been there, doubting God and underestimating him. I think a lot of us have experienced this falsehood, at least in thinking of him too narrowly, inadvertently putting God in a box that makes sense to us. And in doing so, we miss the miracles he has in store for us. The guilt carried by a sinner can be overwhelming, but the forgiveness of God is unfailing. I didn’t know if God would be there for me when I started recovery. I hope  he would be, but I really didn’t know until I got on my knees and honestly surrendered to him. I was hoping that my underestimation of God was wrong, and thankfully it was. I think we tend to see what is in front of us, but God sees everything. He wanted to change my heart, but I needed to surrender my heart to him first. He knows the hurt, guilt, shame, remorse, and all the mistakes we have made and will make. Yet through it all, he loves us. The Cross is all the proof we need. A changed heart will go a long way in rectifying our mistakes and restoring our relationships.  “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.” Psalms 51:1-2 A favorite quote from my friend and pastor David Harris: “You are one one prayer away from God, you can never out-sin the Cross.” Love God, love people, Jesus first!
