Liminal Space in Recovery

May 04, 2020, By: Jimmy Scruggs

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2 NIV
I was reading Richard Rohr’s Daily Meditation last week as he talked about liminal space. He explains liminal space as being betwixt and between, having left one room or stage of life but not yet entered the next. It’s where spiritual transformation can occur, giving up the old normal for something new and usually unknown. The world seems to be in a liminal space right now, a pandemic of the known and even bigger unknown is upon all of us and a new normal is emerging. I started thinking about liminal space and looking at it through the lens of recovery. That betwixt and between time of admitting our hurts, habits, and hang-ups were driving us toward recovery and not yet knowing what recovery would bring. I knew a little of what drove me into addiction and relational dysfunction, and while I so desperately wanted to leave that behind, I had some sort of pathological comfort with it because that is what I knew. Through Celebrate Recovery 12 step work, I came to a place where I had to leave the past behind, let it go, and accept a new norm that Jesus was transforming me from the inside out.  The liminal space of recovery is not an easy place to be. It is an emotional rollercoaster of highs and lows where fear, doubt, confusion, anger, trust and faith issues abound. Fear of the unknown was a major issue for me and the lure of going back to dysfunctional thinking and acting out would rear its ugly head over and over again. But the lifelong learning/experiencing of what it means to live by faith produces a joyful transformation; knowing that God loves me, forgives me, heals me, and wants the best for me is more powerful than the demons that once controlled me. My mind is being renewed! The key for me today in that liminal space is to accept it. Don’t fight it. Relax in it. The unknown needn’t be a frightful experience, but rather an enlightened one.
Hardly anything turns out the way you expected it to, and you’re frequently ready to write life off as too paradoxical and too difficult to endure. Then some indescribable light fights its way through the impenetrable dark. -Paula D’Arcy
