Great Expectations

November 06, 2017, By: Jimmy Scruggs

“Servants, do what you’re told by your masters. And don’t just do the minimum that will get you by. Do your best. Work from the heart for your real Master, for God, confident that you’ll get paid in full when you come into your inheritance. Keep in mind that the ultimate Master you are serving is Christ.” Colossians 3:22-24
Just getting by doesn’t get you very far in life, in marriage, in relationships or at work. It surely won’t get you very far in recovery. I am reminded in Celebrate Recovery that what brought me to recovery was only the tip of the iceberg. What keeps me in recovery is the rest of the story. Jesus wants a relationship with all of me, not just part of me. Layer by layer we come face-to-face with our short comings and as we bring them out and into the light, we are healed over and over again. It comes down to faith and it comes down to the willingness to persevere, to courageously walk through the fear that holds us back. In recovery there is an ongoing internal conflict between good and evil, between the past and present, between fear and love. Can you go the next mile in your recovery or in helping someone with theirs? How about two miles? Jesus said “If someone demands that you go one mile, go with them two miles.” Matthew 5:41 Great expectations is more than what brings you to recovery; it’s about living life to the fullest in Christ. A couple of quotes from Phillips Brooks, a 19th century Preacher extraordinaire: “Do not pray for easy lives; pray to be stronger people. Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers; pray for powers equal to your tasks. Then the doing of your work shall be no miracle, but you shall be the miracle.” “In everything you do, put God first, and he will direct you and crown your efforts with success.” Proverbs 3:6 Love God, love people, Jesus first!
