Flip the Switch

March 20, 2017, By: Jimmy Scruggs

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Ephesians 5:8-10
For us to see light means we must have a reference point in which we have seen darkness. What kind of darkness? It comes in a wide variety of situations and no one is really immune to it. I guess you could say darkness is an equal opportunity offender. In Celebrate Recovery we have people from every walk of life, social status, financial circumstance, and educational strata. A third come for addictive reasons, which leaves two-thirds coming for life problems that they too feel stuck and can’t see the light for the darkness. So what gets us to flip the switch so we can see the light? The reasons vary with the circumstance and the motivators are many. Some are just sick and tired of being sick and tired. Others may have a life event that profoundly affects them. Still others have a breakthrough and decide to meet their fears head on as the pain of life overcomes them. Some may be encouraged by family, church, counselors, courts, and friends. And, yet some may have nowhere else to run and they are at a very serious crossroads in their life. What do all these people have in common that causes them to flip the switch—a moment of clarity followed by a decision to climb out of the darkness. That involves surrender and a leap of faith. Why faith? We can’t do it ourselves; we need Jesus to light the way. It’s like electricity; we know it’s all around us but we can’t see it until we flip the switch. When we flip our spiritual switch we see the light and it shines bright. It is here we find hope, freedom, love, grace, mercy and truth. The road we travel has many peaks and valleys, twists and turns, but through it all His light shines bright and we are lost no more. What is holding you back from Jesus? What part of your life are you trying to control or hide? What is keeping you from flipping the switch? Whatever it is let it go and let God in. If you are stuck and the lights are getting dim we encourage you to stop in any Friday night at CR, the light is always on. Love God, love people, Jesus first!
