Water and Creation (Day 22)

June 27, 2021, By: Jimmy Scruggs

Starter Prayer: Spirit of Living Water, you hold all of creation in your womb and give us life on earth at birth. Teach me the wonder and mystery of the ways you are creating and re-creating me. Help me see and honor this water-born miracle in all the things you have made.

Focus Phrase: Water and Creation

Scripture Reading: Psalm 104

Optional Read-along: Water, Wind, Earth and Fire pp. 75-79a (Chapter Two: Sister Water, Section: Water and Creation.)

Spiritual Direction:

Your life began in a watery womb. When time was right, you came forth from the waters and took your first deep breath of life. Such is true of all living things. In the beginning, we are formed in water. And water then remains a part of life for as long as life endures.

This week you are invited to explore the benefit of water in your own prayer life. Herman Melville writes (Chapter 1 of Moby Dick): Say you are in the country; in some high land of lakes. Take almost any path you please, and ten to one it carries you down in a dale, and leaves you there by a pool in the stream. There is magic in it… Yes, as everyone knows, meditation and water are wedded forever.

Our purpose this week is simply to get in touch with the element of water and learn new ways of meditation (praying) with water. Some things to try each day: Walk in the rain, sit and watch a park fountain, go swimming or boating, play in the sprinkler with children, give thanks for the gift of water and donate to a cause that brings clean water to people in need.

Be encouraged in your practice,

Katie Martinez
