Transformation From The Inside Out

April 13, 2020, By: Jimmy Scruggs

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
My hope and prayer is that you had a meaningful Easter Sunday experience, maybe not what most of us are used to but good none the less. I know I did, Pastor Ryan at Crossroads gave a powerful message and something he said caught my recovery ear- “Life is a series of deaths and resurrections.” Wow when I heard that it reminded me of recovery, my walk with Christ. Some may say that recovery doesn’t apply to them, but I say everyone is in recovery from something. My Christian walk is about surrendering parts of me (death) to gain more of Him (resurrection). And it happens over and over again. Its how we grow spiritually, through transformation, and it’s something that can’t be faked or hurried; only experienced. Gerald May, in his book Addiction and Grace, points this out: “It is important to note that the spiritual growth process involves far more relinquishment than acquisition. In our culture, we are conditioned to expect growth to involve acquisition of new facts and understandings. But spiritual growth is different. The essential process is one of transformation, not education. It is, if anything, an unlearning process in which our old ways are cleansed, liberated, and redeemed. Spiritual growth does not establish new normalities through more habituation and adaptation. Instead, it frees us from slavery to conditioning; it leads us in the direction of unconditional love.” If you find yourself running away from something then you are also running towards something. It took me awhile but I finally ran to Jesus, where my life is being transformed over and over again. Run to Jesus and live life to its fullest!
“For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love. Love your neighbor as yourself.” Galatians 5:13-14
