The Process of Forgetting

August 26, 2019, By: Jimmy Scruggs

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.” Isaiah 43:18
In dealing with our past it is common to want to forget; to bury our hurts rather than face them. Many people come to CR because trying to forget the past has caught up with them in the here-and-now. Many have said: “I gave all my past to God and I thought I could just forget about it and move on.” Sometimes people equate forgetting with ignoring—they are not the same. Sooner or later you will need to deal with past hurts, hang-ups and habits to be free of them. To truly forget you need to learn from your past, offer forgiveness, make amends, and then release it. We no longer live in the past, but we carry the memory of the past. Why? One benefit is in helping other people. Sharing your story with a newcomer can give them hope that they, too, can be set free from the chains that have held them down. Sharing what God has done in your life is why we are here.
For the light is capable of showing up everything for what it really is. It is possible for the light to turn the thing it shines upon into light also.” Ephesians 4:26-27
How can we truly help another if we have ignored our own darkness? There is no closure without disclosure. Let God turn your darkness into light. If you’re stuck in a hurt, habit or hang up, try a CR 12-step group. We have a new Women’s group starting soon. A new Men’s 12-step group has already begun and enrollment is open.
