Heart Check

An intelligent person aims at wise action, but a fool starts off in many directions. Proverbs 14:24
Stress—we all experience it. The question is: how do we manage it? The spiritual, mental, emotional, relational, and physical aspects of stress can have devastating effects if allowed to go unchecked for long periods of time. I think most of us can relate to that statement. Stress is a fact of life; it can be a reaction to an outside force or a self-inflicted state of mind. Either way, if we don’t deal with it, it will deal with us. When I think of long term stress I think of it as a relapse in the making. Most people think of relapse in terms of a recovering alcoholic or addict drinking or using again—or a codependent getting involved in another bad relationship. For me, relapse starts way before any of these obvious events occur. I believe relapse begins with a spiritual let-down first, followed by a mental and emotional let-down second. If these two areas of our lives continue to go unchecked, reverting back to old behavior follows. So, in a sense we all relapse on some level more than we care to admit. Celebrate Recovery has a HEART check which can help us to identify stress threats in our lives. Check in daily and ask yourself if you are: Hurting Exhausted Angry Resentful Tense If you answer yes to any of these questions, then apply the recovery tools you have to get back on track. So often many of us know the cause of our stress but we fail to take the action needed to deal with it. When we turn our will over to God, try not to take it back before He has time to do something good with it.
“Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12
If you’re stuck in a hurt, habit or hang up, try a CR 12 step group. We have a new Women’s group starting soon. A new Men’s 12 step group has started and enrollment is open.
