You Need A Friend

November 18, 2019, By: Jimmy Scruggs

“Some men came bringing to him a paralytic, carried by four of them. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus and, after digging through it, lowered the mat the paralyzed man was lying on. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic. “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Mark 2:3-5
Many of us come to CR in desperate condition, having lost supportive relationships, friends and family. We come through the door fearful, doubting, worried, addicted, lost, hurting from a hundred different causes. But if we stick around CR for a while, we find the common solution: Jesus. We find him in our walk through the steps and in our relationships with each other. We come to CR as takers and through God’s transformation we become givers. I’m reminded of a dear old friend from my early recovery days. Her name was Doris and she was the kindest woman you would ever meet. She loved Jesus and she showed it. A couple of her pearls of wisdom come to mind. One was “Honey, fear will get you to recovery, but it won’t keep you in recovery.” And the other: “Honey, we will love you until you learn to love yourself.” The first is a recognition that fear may bring you to CR, but if you don’t walk through it, fear will continue to hold you back. And the second affirms that you will find people in CR who will love you because that’s what Jesus does, He loves us despite what may be going on in our lives. He loves us because He is Love.
“Two are better off than one, because together they can work more effectively. If one of them falls down, the other can help him up.” Ecclesiastes 4:9
