Take the Step

March 06, 2017, By: Jimmy Scruggs

Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.” “Yes come” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me Lord!” he shouted. Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?” Matthew 14:28-31
Everyday with God is a special day and at this time of year with Easter approaching it seems even more so. Many will be focused on the Lenten tradition of sacrificing something of value over the 40 days leading up to Christ’s Crucifixion. Nothing wrong with that; especially when we take hold of what Jesus sacrificed for us on the Cross. But he also gave us so much more, a forever life with him in heaven and a joyous life with him on earth. So this time of year I’m focused more on what I can start doing as I grow in Christ. This is the way of recovery; we don’t just stop our damaging behaviors, we have to rely on God to help us with that. And we have to rely on God to change us and transform us into what He has created us to be. We can’t do it ourselves and we can’t do it without walking through the fear and taking the step to trust God. What new choices can we make that enlarges our spiritual life, that draws us closer to God? Are we content on playing it safe or can we be bold in our actions and our faith in Jesus? As I listened to the weekend message at church, I thought of the times I have answered God’s call and how they were difficult times. Sometimes we want to find comfort and safety in the belly of the boat as the storm passes over, but at some point we need to step out of the boat and learn to walk on the water. That takes faith and perseverance; relying on Jesus to reach out to us over and over again. What does walking on water mean to me? It’s where my desires connect with God’s desires and I am forever changed. What does it mean to you? Pastor John quote: “You will never learn to walk on water if you don’t get out of the boat.” Love God, love people, Jesus first! Dana Cramer
