Why Simple Can Be So Hard

July 01, 2019, By: Jimmy Scruggs

For it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.” Philippians 2:13
Here is a fact: I can complicate the simplest of things. Sound familiar? It seems to be a problem for a lot of people; I know it is for me. When I first looked at the 12 steps I thought I could do most of them, but I had to admit a couple of the steps were scary. When I actually started working the steps I found out the truth: what seemed simple on paper was so very hard to do. Let go and let God is an everyday encounter in recovery. When I inventory my day there are times I become painfully aware how my partnership with God has become a solo event. “What happened to you, God, where did you go? Oh, now I see it, I turned my will over to you today and then I took it back. I forgot that we are a team, I have a job to do and so do you. I get in trouble when I try to do your job, God. I think I know why; I was born after the fall; yes—the whole Adam and Eve thing—sin. I know, God, that I’m imperfect and yet you love me more than I can fathom. In fact, You sent Your son to die on the cross for my sins; You made it real simple for me God, but why is it so hard? Oh, I remember now, you gave us free will and you gave us a choice, yes I know now. I’m starting to understand just a little of the love you have for me. Thank you God—you are my rock, my fortress, my savior.” Need a place to recover from life? Check out Celebrate Recovery at Crossroads Church.
