Overcoming Evil With Good

June 05, 2017, By: Jimmy Scruggs

“Do not be overcome with evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:21
Why do we need recovery? Why after 31 years am I still in recovery? I don’t know about you, but after all these years the truth is I still can’t fix myself but I know who can. There is one God and you and I are not him. We all come to Celebrate Recovery with a hurt, habit, or hang-up, and as we engage in the process we find there is a lot more to our story than we realized. Recovery as I define it, is my daily walk with Jesus; it is the spiritual battle between good and evil, God’s will and free will. I need a savior every day in my life, I need a loving and forgiving God in my life, I need his grace daily. In Celebrate Recovery we learn to take ownership of the choices we make. Not everything I do wrong can be blamed on Satan; that’s far too simple and inaccurate. No, there are choices and mistakes I make that are of my own free will that will negatively affect myself and others. Breaking through the denial of those choices is the first step, accepting Jesus and his redeeming work on the Cross is next. Once we get honest about ourselves and commit to Jesus, we have the power to move forward in our recovery and get to the root of our problems. We humbly ask God to fix us instead of relying on the false pretense that we can fix ourselves. Many have spent a lifetime trying to play God and have failed. A big part of recovery is knowing that we have choices today and as we grow in Christ Jesus we start making better choices. Evil versus good will always be present, but when we choose Jesus we will overcome evil. Choose God’s will for your life today, listen to the Holy Spirit within you, and know that God’s word never changes, his goodness abounds. Love God, love people, Jesus first!
