More Than We Bargained For

February 20, 2017, By: Jimmy Scruggs

Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord. Lamentations 3:40
Most of us come to CR knowing that something is wrong; we may be in denial as to the extent of the problems but we all come with our hurts, hang-ups and habits. As we progress through the principles and steps we soon realize there is more going on with us than what brought us to CR. In essence we know our symptoms, but not always the cause. It’s a lot like going to the doctor for an illness; you can describe the symptoms but may not know much else. The doctor does an exam, runs the tests, and comes back to tell you he found the diagnosis but it’s more than you thought. The doctor tells you he is glad you came in when you did, there are serious causes behind your symptoms and now that we know the full extent of your illness we can treat it. Wow, did we get more than we bargained for, but grateful it can be treated. Recovery can be like that doctor visit. The symptoms that bring us to CR are part of a bigger picture; they can be just the tip of the iceberg. We learn and grow through the recovery process, and see that we are getting more than we bargained for, but that isn’t a bad thing. God is continually revealing to us the causes and conditions of our sickness and offers a spiritual treatment plan to move us forward. We throw off the shackles and start living a new life; we begin to rely on God’s power instead of our own. There is always something we need to stop doing and something we need to start doing so we can live a life that Jesus wants for us. That was more than I bargained for in the beginning, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. “As for us, we have this large crowd of witnesses around us. So then let us rid ourselves of everything that gets in the way, and the sin which holds on to us so tightly, and let us run with determination the race that lies before us.” Hebrews 12:1 Love God, love people, Jesus first!
