Keep it Simple

September 25, 2017, By: Jimmy Scruggs

“But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.” 2 Corinthians 11:3
“Keep it simple” is an old recovery phrase that reminds us to focus on the 12 steps of recovery instead of relying on our old patterns of destructive thinking. The ability to complicate the simple and make mountains out of mole hills is a reality for many of us, it sure was for me. Who was my worst enemy? Me of course! Keeping it simple has profound spiritual implications; as we continue to grow in Christ and follow his will for our life, our lives become less cluttered, our thinking and decision making has much more clarity to it. From a spiritual standpoint, simplicity is the ongoing surrender of self to God’s will; or (I am about to use a word I have never liked) becoming more obedient to God’s word. Obedience is nothing more than knowing God’s word and following it. To do that, you have to be engaged in his word and live your life as a servant for Christ, just as Christ has done for us. Celebrate Recovery is a part of our Christian walk; it provides step-by-step instruction in breaking down the complexity of our human lives for the simplicity that is found in our life with Jesus. Keeping it simple is hard to do and at times it gets messy. We don’t give up our negative patterns of behavior easily, but when we do–how simple our lives become. “My Grace is enough for you…” 2 Corinthians 12:9 Celebrate what is found; Recover what was lost.
