Getting Honest

July 29, 2019, By: Jimmy Scruggs

“I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.” Romans 7:18
Last week I was reading the book by Pastor Tim Harlow, What Made Jesus Mad, when I came upon a poem he embraced by Portia Nelson that speaks to the recovery journey. “There’s a Hole in My Sidewalk” Chapter One: I walk down the street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I fall in. I am lost . . . I am helpless. It isn’t my fault . . . It takes forever to find a way out. Chapter Two: I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I pretend I don’t see it. I fall in again. I can’t believe I am in the same place. But it isn’t my fault. It still takes me a long time to get out.” Chapter Three: I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I see it is there. I still fall in . . . it’s a habit. My eyes are open. I know where I am. It is my fault. I get out immediately. Chapter Four: I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I walk around it. Chapter Five: I walk down another street. The poem speaks to the ongoing struggle of getting honest with ones’ self and equipping ourselves to make needed changes. It is a life long journey, and I am grateful for Celebrate Recovery, a program that helps us break through our hypocrisy as we turn to Jesus for life-saving and life-changing transformation. If you’re stuck in a hurt, habit or hang up, try a CR 12 step group. We have a new Women’s group starting soon. A new Men’s 12 step group has started and enrollment is open. God loves you, Jesus died for you, His spirit lives in you! Say Yes to Jesus and Live Love! Dana Cramer // Celebrate Recovery at Crossroads Church
