Character

March 13, 2017, By: Jimmy Scruggs

Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other. Galatians 5:24-26
I was having a conversation with my grandson the other day, we were talking about character. I told him for much of my early life people considered me a character; the black sheep kind of character, it was all about me and rules were made to be broken. There is a difference between being a character and being a person of character. As we journey in our Christian faith and in our recovery we eventually come face to face with our character issues. Part of the 12-step process is admitting our wrongs through repentance, making amends and offering forgiveness. This process transforms us from being a dishonest character to being a person of character. What does it mean to be a person of character? There are many great traits that come to mind, but Galatians 5:22-23 sums it up pretty well for me. “The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” There is no better teacher of character than Christ Jesus. To walk with Jesus is to be a person of character. Love God, love people, Jesus first!
